Alberta Quintet

A dear friend of mine commissioned this set as a Christmas present for her husband. Shhh! Don't say anything. We wanted an Alberta nature theme with different aspects being highlighted. We went from far away to close up with this. I really hope he likes them.

Five Things You May Not Know About Me

There is a little game being played right now around artists blogs and I was tagged by Chris Stott. After I answer its my turn to tag five other artists! Hee!

1. I have a serious dislike (some might say phobia) of talking on the phone. With the invention of email, I've pretty much arranged my life around this sad fact. If you call me, I'll talk with no issue. If I have to call you.... that takes a little more bravery on my part. I think it boils down to me feeling like I'm interrupting something important. Making appointments is a HUGE task.

2. I have one pointy ear and one regular ear. I'm either half vulcan or half elf. Depends on my mood.

3. I'm a runner. What an unusual thing in the art world. I picked up running a few years ago and while my talents are still in the studio, I get a huge sense of enjoyment from it. I've done one marathon, a couple of half marathons, trail races, 10 km races and a relay. I am slooooow.

4. I'm a baptised Mennonite. This is a funny one because when I tell people that, they picture me with a long black dress and a kerchief in my hair. I'm Mennonite Brethern though, its a lot more modern. Most people who know me probably wouldn't even realize that either.

5. To tie in the post above... I was seriously seriously goth in high school. Striped tights, black eyeliner, white face, black hair. I chuckle when I look at old pictures because I've changed so much - not quite so Siouxie Sioux anymore. Although I still wear a lot of black.

What a study in contrasts! Oh well.

Okay, in turn I tag.... Joanne Giesbrecht, Ivan Chan, Sarah Kincheloe, Garden Painter Art, and Moussart.

Finally done and I'm very pleased with the results of this one! You can find out more here.

On the Easel: Collection with Red Plate

This large 24"x24" piece should be completed and listed this evening.

As you can see, there are a lot of familiar plates there but I have also been wanting to change things a little. I found a lovely, glossy red rimmed plate that picks up the red of my sake cup beautifully. The addition of this bright reddish orange colour has really changed the feel of my plate collection.

I have also changed the feel of things by using a square canvas. It really adds to this composition I think. Nice and large as well.

If you have any questions about this before I list it, don't hesitate to contact me.

Mermaid Sisters

I hope these mermaids are enjoyed by their young patrons! It was fun to do such a lighthearted commission.

Canada Post Shipping Deadlines

This is just to give my clients an idea of how much time there is left to order gifts and have them shipped on time to US and Canadian Destinations.

The dates listed are the ones provided to me by Canada Post, I still like to ship sooner rather than later to avoid frantic emailing and worry over whether or not the package will be there to set under the tree.

I ship to the US via Expedited Parcel US and Canada is Expedited Parcel as well. If you are interested in a faster method (I recommend Expresspost) contact me first and I will provide you with a quote. If you have an account with a major shipper, I can probably do that as well.

Canada - December 14th (expresspost would be December 17th)

USA - December 10th (expresspost would be December 14th)

On The Easel: The Mermaid Sisters

This is a commission I'm working on for some very special sisters I know. They will each have a mermaid when this arrives. They even got to pick out the hair and fin colour. These canvases measure 9" wide by 12" tall. Perfect for a little display in thier bedroom.

I still have a few spots open for Christmas commissions. If you are interested in something like this, or have another request contact me and we can figure something out.

On The Easel: Yellow Door

I've been working on this for over a week now - its pretty large 24" wide by 36" tall. As usual, the colours here don't do it justice in real life. I'll be finishing it in the next few days.

I've used my thick combed texture here and once I get all my details just right, I'll start laying down numerous washes to really add depth and richer colour.

Check back to find the listing. Contact me if you have any questions!

New on Etsy for the Christmas Season

I've added some more goodies made by my mother and father in law. Take a peek at my etsy store for a closer look.

ACEO style in Large Format - Completed

This piece was something I really took my time on. I layered thin wash after thin wash adding a huge amount of depth to the orange cast pavement. As you can see, the bottles have deepened shadows and glossy highlights. It is so much more striking in person.

I hope my client is pleased.

Sneak peek - ACEO style in LARGE canvas format!

This is a commissioned piece from a client who first contacted me when he saw this piece up for auction. We share similiar tastes in music - the piece he wanted me to use is by a favourite artist, Nick Cave.
I am really enjoying the freedom that such a large canvas affords me. (24" x 36") I've been layering thin thin washes of paint and building an incredible amount of depth. Also, painting a portrait, a male portrait at that, is a really fun change of pace.

Plates Trio

Some regular readers might remember a piece that I did a few weeks ago, Plates and Sake Cup. Before I listed it, a collector contacted me and inquired about the possiblity of doing a grouping of pieces that interacted with one another based on this piece.
What emerged were three pieces talking about the identities of plates. The Peaches on Plate (12" x 12") shows plates as a functional vessel. The Plates and Sake Cup (12"x 18") demonstrates plates as circular forms. The Plates Pattern (24" x 36")explores plates through thier different patterns.
It was really enjoyable working large and also working in a series. I might explore this further...

Puppy Portrait - Final

We are done! I love how the fur turned out. It was a challenge to get the silkiness with the colour changes. I hope it is a well loved piece.

Angel Runner

I'm still here, I'm busy doing a number of projects - I will post them when they are completed.

One project has been designing this angel runner for a few uses, one as a bib to run in honour of a friends' husband to be worn October 14th, another has been for technical (sports) running shirts and a tote bag.

ACEO 188

Woo! We are approaching the 200 ACEO mark. I can't believe I've painted this many. You can find this pretty lady of the sea over here.

Puppy - step three

You can see that I've added more depth in the snow background and definition to the fur. This is going along quite easily. I'm really enjoying this piece!

Puppy - step two

Ahhhh..... thats a bit better. Making some progress now.

Puppy - step one

Wow - hard to imagine this is going to look like a nice painting! Pretty rough layout.

Puppy Sketch

Okay, I just LOVE the angle of this portrait. I think it really conveys the relationship of dog and owner with how you lock eyes.

This will be a snow picture, hence the lack of detail in the background. Reminds me of another portrait I did last year.....

Things are starting to get busy, I tend to get bookings for Christmas commission pieces around this time. I've decided I'm going to stagger my ACEO listings somewhat to take the pressure off and have new things for my collectors.

As always, I'm happy to combine shipping on multiple auctions as long as you pay within 7 days and let me know to hold them!

You can find this lovely lady here.

Sneak peek...

This is another collection of plates I've been working on... my camera died and then the lighting got bad. I'll list this when I can get a better photograph going.

This one has some of the same plates but also a sake cup that we recieved at our wedding. Another hit of blue can be found inside it. Matches the bottom plate beautifully. The light is quite warm in this piece, the reds and golds really shine.

A Quartet of ACEO - lots of stripes today!

Finally! Some ACEO on auction here. I cannot believe how busy the last two weeks have been. I think I can finally get on some projects that I've been meaning to get finished now.
Tomorrow I'm starting another collection of plates - I'll post more when I have some progress!

Tattoo - Finished!

I just have to get final clearance from my friend, but at this point I think all systems are go!

Tattoo: Halfway there....

I'll be finishing this up either tonight or tomorrow....
ACEO collectors, I'll be listing 4 brand new cards Monday evening - check back then!

Tattoo Sketch

I love adapting the imagery I do in ACEO format to other sizes. This is the ultimate adaptation: a tattoo! How I do tattoo design is basically a client commissions the artwork, I do it on either paper or canvas and they get to keep the original piece plus authorization to use it as a tattoo.

Its always so touching to find the reasons behind a new tattoo. So many people use them to mark a milestone or a memory. Its even more touching to be included in the process.

Sunday School Basics

A fun little side project I've been working on for our church's nursery....
