Mermaid with Pearl Ornaments, Stars and Flowers

Okay, I really went to town on this ACEO... check out the details on the flowers and stars. I'm working on a 9" x 12" still life as well right now (hoping to list tomorrow) and I find that I LOVE to switch between larger work and ACEO... almost like doing painting intervals.

3 New Goth Girls

I decided to try something a little different with these girls. I have this huge book called "The Grammar of Ornament - The Classic Encyclopedia of Design and Decorative Art" Its a reprint of a book that was first published in 1856.

Inside it is a like a Sears catalogue of little design motifs. Indian, Chinese, Greek... you name it. Bits and pieces of little lines of scrollery and swirls. A lovely big tome.

Anyways, I decided to jazz up the backgrounds with some inspiration from the pages of this book. Very challenging.

By special request, I have listed these on etsy first instead of ebay. We will see how they do over there.... hmm. Two are already gone! Wow!

Edited to add: okay, now they are all gone. LOL.

Mermaid with Flowers and Black Background

To celebrate our returning health I've done some pretty yellow flowers on this card. Kind of like when spring arrives. New life, which is how I'm feeling now that my awful cold is receding. Oy.

Thank you so much!

Mermaid with Swirls on Black Background

This little lady of the sea is tinier than others I've painted - there is more of her to see and more hair etc filling up the 2.5"x 3.5" space.

She took forever. 'Nuff said.

I do love how she turned out though.

Lady with Seven Stars

Hmmm, a little something different from me today. I've had this imagery in my head for a couple of weeks now. Kind of a convoluted explaination on what it is about I guess:

I'm participating in a Bible study that is now focussing on Revelation. While we were working through the first bit (Rev 1:10 - 16) I was doodling and was totally absorbed with the imagery of seven stars (Rev 1:16).

So I drew seven stars. Of course, being human, I had to draw a parallel to the earlier reference of the seven churches (Rev 1:11). Well of course, the church is Christ's chosen bride (Eph 5:25-27) I had to draw a young blushing lady wearing the stars in an almost old fashioned bridal head dress....

Okay, this isn't hugely deep theology but I figured it would be interesting to explain how this picture developed.

Classic Mermaid Close Up

Just in case you are curious....

A Very Classical Looking Mermaid

With her soft curves and curly fringe this one almost has a Roman look about her. Add in those flower ornaments and it throws a nod into 20's wedding veils. LOL.

I like her expression. She seems very quiet and nice.

Kalanchoe - Final

We'll I'm just tickled with how these turned out. The pinky red of the blossoms is such a nice counter balance to the yellow whites and blues throughout the piece. It really came together last night.

I've forgotten how much fun that thick texture can be to paint - will have to make some time to experiment further....
